# Uploading Your Discharge Paperwork to AfterCare App

> Add your hospital discharge paperwork as a PDF or photo. AfterCare skips duplicates and shows live progress while it builds your recovery plan.

AfterCare turns your discharge paperwork into a structured recovery plan the moment you upload it. You can add a PDF, take a photo of a printed page, pick an image from your camera roll, or pull a file directly from Google Drive — AfterCare accepts them all and processes each one against your original document, never inventing information that isn't there.

## Accepted file types

    Any PDF exported from a hospital system or scanned at home. You can upload
    multiple PDFs in one batch.
  </Card>

## How to upload your paperwork

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the Upload screen">
    Tap **Add your paperwork** from the home screen or the navigation menu.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose how to add your file">
    Select one of three options:

    * **Choose PDF files** — opens your device's file picker filtered to PDFs.
    * **Take or upload photos** — opens your photo library (or camera) so you can photograph a printed sheet or select an existing image.
    * **Connect from Google Drive** — available when Google Drive is configured; AfterCare downloads the file from your Drive and uploads it for processing.

    You can also drag one or more files onto the upload area if you're on a desktop browser.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Watch the progress bar">
    AfterCare uploads each file one at a time and shows a live percentage
    indicator. If you add a batch of files, the screen displays **"Adding file
    2 of 3… 47%"** so you always know where you are.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Wait for processing to complete">
    After the upload finishes, AfterCare moves the document through its
    processing pipeline — reading the text, sorting it into sections, finding
    your medications, appointments, warning signs, recovery timeline, medical
    terms, and running a final quality check. Each stage is shown on the
    processing screen as it completes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review your recovery plan">
    Once the status changes to **Ready**, your medications, appointments, daily
    plan, and warning signs are all available from the navigation menu.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  AfterCare stores your document securely. Your paperwork is never shared with
  third parties and is only used to build your personal recovery plan.
</Note>

## Document status labels

After upload, each document shows one of four statuses:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Saved** | The file has been received and is queued for processing. |
| **Processing** | AfterCare is actively extracting your recovery information. |
| **Ready** | Your recovery plan is complete and available. |
| **Couldn't be processed** | Something prevented extraction — an error message explains why. |

## Uploading multiple files at once

You can select or drop as many files as you like in a single batch. AfterCare processes them sequentially, creating a separate recovery guide for each file. If one file in the batch fails, the rest still continue — you'll see a list of which files couldn't be added so you can retry just those.

## How deduplication works

AfterCare detects when you add a document you've already uploaded. If the same file is submitted again, AfterCare returns the existing document rather than reprocessing it from scratch. This prevents duplicate recovery plans and keeps your document list clean.

<Tip>
  If you photographed a multi-page document, upload all the pages in one batch.
  Each page becomes its own document in AfterCare, so uploading them together
  makes it easy to find them later.
